Operating instructions,
The BAK 400 HD uses a mechanical internal glass reticle scale and an analog/illuminated compass rather than a digital laser.
How to Use a Compass
A compass indicates the bearing angle of the observed target relative to your position.
Compass readings range from 0° (360°) to 360°, with the following meanings:
360°: Due North
90°: Due East
180°: Due South
270°: Due West
For example, a reading of 100° means 10 degrees south of due East.
How the Internal Compass Works
Direction in Degrees: Look through the right eyepiece (or designated compass window) to see a degree scale from 0 to 360 relative to magnetic north.
Reading Bearings: North is 0°/360°, East is 90°, South is 180°, and West is 270°. Aligning the tick mark with your target gives your exact directional bearing.
Night Illumination: Turn on the built-in light switch powered by small side-mounted batteries to illuminate the compass scale during low-light conditions at dusk or dawn.
How the Internal Rangefinder Works
The Reticle Scale: You will see a vertical scale with hash marks and a horizontal crosshair on the field of view in the left eyepiece. This is a graticule-based optical rangefinder, not an electronic laser.
The Calculation Formula: To find how far away an object is, you must know or estimate its actual height (or width).
To find the distance to an object, you count how many hash marks (mils) it covers on the reticle, then apply the optical rangefinder formula.
The Optical Rangefinder Formula
\(\text{Distance}=\frac{\text{Actual\ Size\ of\ Target}\times 1000}{\text{Reticle\ Size\ (mils)}}\)
Example 1: Calculating Distance to a Person
-
The Scenario: You see a person standing in the distance.
-
Estimated Actual Size: Assume an average adult height of \(1.8 \text{ metres}\).
-
Reticle Size: The person fills exactly \(3\text{ mils}\) (hash marks) from head to toe.
-
The Calculation:
\(\text{Distance}=\frac{1.8\times 1000}{3}\)
\(\text{Distance}=\frac{1800}{3}=600\text{\ metres}\)
-
The Result: The person is exactly \(600 \text{ metres}\) away from you.
Example 2: Calculating Distance to a Coastline Object
-
The Scenario: You are looking out at a standard navigation buoy or small boat.
-
Estimated Actual Size: You know the object is roughly \(4 \text{ metres}\) tall.
-
Reticle Size: The object covers \(8\text{ mils}\) on the vertical scale.
-
The Calculation:
\(\text{Distance}=\frac{4\times 1000}{8}\)
\(\text{Distance}=\frac{4000}{8}=500\text{\ metres}\)
-
The Result: The object is exactly \(500 \text{ metres}\) away.
Pro Tip for Field Use
Your binoculars has the rotational
calculator ring on the outer lens barrel, so you do not need to do the division in your head. You simply rotate the dial to align your known
target size with the
mils counted, and the indicator arrow will instantly point to your final distance.

In simple terms.

llustrated Instructions (Using a Tree as an Example)When you know the actual height of a distant object (a tree is used here as an example, with an actual height of 4 meters), follow these steps to measure the distance:Aim the device at the target object, then turn the focusing handwheel to focus on the object. (At this point, both the target object and the measuring reticle should be clearly visible simultaneously.)Align the horizontal baseline of the measuring reticle with the bottom edge of the object, then read the reticule height value of the object. (As shown in the figure, the measured reticule height value of the object is 3.)Rotate the measuring counting ring to align the arrow mark with the reticule scale mark "3". Check the distance scale value corresponding to the object size mark "4".If the unit for mark 4 is meters, the corresponding reading of 140 is also in meters, meaning your distance to the object is 140 meters.
