Surviving the brutal North African desert campaigns required a deep understanding of thermal physics.

Ordinary soldiers were issued standard metal canteens. This was a thermodynamic disaster! Metal is an incredible thermal conductor. When the blazing desert sun hit the metal flask, it rapidly transferred the 120-degree ambient heat straight into the liquid. The soldiers' only drinking water literally reached temperatures so hot it would burn their mouths!

Instead of solid metal, they stored massive amounts of water in heavy woven canvas bags and hung them outside their vehicles. Because canvas is slightly porous, microscopic amounts of water slowly "weeped" to the outside. As the dry desert wind hit the bag, the water droplets instantly evaporated! The physics of evaporation chemically sucked the ambient heat away from the bag, acting like a natural refrigerator! Even in 120-degree weather, the water inside the canvas bag stayed refreshingly ice-cold!

For best results only fill bags to 3/4's full.

Care Instructions

Before first use the water bag must be totally immersed in clean water for 24 hours to soak then let it completely dry so the thread swells and seals.  If water bag still leaks repeat the process.  It may take up to three attempts before the water bag seals completely.
